Parkway North students watch the student vs staff kickball game during AcLab on Friday, Nov. 8. Students had to pay a $1 entrance fee, serving as a donation to Siteman Cancer Center.
Junior Kayden Hagemann throws the ball to her teammate during warmups. “I chose to participate because a lot of my friends were doing it,” Hagemann said.”I would definitely do it again next year.”
Senior Gemma Fish kicks the ball in an attempt to score points for her team. “I chose to participate in the game because it’s my senior year and I want to make the most of it,” Fish said.
A group of students cheer on their team as they play against the teachers. Student teams had to play against each other on Nov. 2 in order to qualify to play against the teachers.
Becky Samardzic, the organizer of the event, rolls the ball for the student team to kick. “I was trying to think of ways to do some sort of athletic activity to get people up and moving, and so I thought it would be fun to incorporate a student vs staff,” said Samardzic, who is North’s Staff and Student Health and Wellness Leader.
Junior Joshua Nichols runs to second base, trying to avoid being hit by the ball. Though kickball and baseball have similar rules, to get out in kickball you can be hit by the ball and be out, unlike in baseball.
Teachers and students disagree over a call. Commentary was provided by senior Dominic Hudson and Bob McKitrick, which added to the lighthearted competitiveness of the event.
Junior Evan Marsh slides to catch the ball. The football field was muddy, adding a challenging and fun aspect to the game
Matt Alonzo declares Jon Hardy safe at first base while fellow staff members look on. Both staff and students were invested in the game’s outcome, each cheering on their team.
Jeff Kinney throws the ball to his teammate. “I would assume for the students, it’s fun to see teachers kind of out of their element and going out and doing things, and sometimes making fools of ourselves in the process,” said Samardzic.
Teachers and students shake hands after the Staff team wins. This reignites the staffs’ winning streak, which they held for multiple years before being beaten last year by the students.
