On Jan. 24, 2025, small artist, Anna B Savage, released her third record album “You & i are Earth”. For indie, folk, and country lovers, this is a welcomed release as the album connects to a deep part of the audience and should be listened to.
Anna B Savage is a Dublin-based singer-songwriter who traveled to various places after her debut 2015 EP caught the attention of famous musician Father John Misty. In 2020, she received her master’s degree in music and has been quite a hit in the small alternative/indie community scene ever since.
Her songs/albums are a deep mixture of stark, skeletal paintings depicting moods and reflection, mainly using a frame of her voice and brief vocal assistance. Vocal assistance can provide hands-free ways to interact with tech, help complete the singer’s tasks’ quicker, and is simply just a natural language communication. This is true for Savage on this album as it coincides with the audience being able to hear Savage more clearly and efficiently. It also helps the listener gain a deeper understanding by helping them connect their own emotions and experiences to the song by a second-hand singer if they miss the main singer’s point.
Her newest album is healing to the soul because of how it sounds. It sounds like she’s talking to someone she’s pretty close to and her voice is calming and peaceful. It makes the listener feel like she is talking to them as a calming friend and that they’re in a state of euphoric episode.
She incorporates many natural sounds like birds singing and the sea crashes on the shore into songs like “Lighthouse” and “Talk to Me.” This gives the sense of being at peace with one’s self while wanting to be at home or with others.
Her lyrics are another way for listeners to connect with her more deeply and relate to her easier, feeling at peace because someone understands them. Her lyrics focus on having someone who will be there for you and make you feel save. She uses metaphors like the lighthouse to explain how others can be guiding light and bring her home. Her voice is serene when she sings the lyric ‘talk to me’ in one of her songs, describing how she wants to know “how the wind smoothes the waves”. Once again, she metaphorically yearns for someone to help calm her and make her feel save.
To many listeners, when a song hits them hard enough, it resonates within them for a while. It also can release feel-good chemicals in the brain and act as a powerful tool for emotional regulation and expression, which can be helpful to those in a time of trauma and/or stress. The instruments on this album do just that and sound fluid, soft, and melodic with a gentle touch to it. It sounds like you’re strolling through a grassy green forest with just you and your headphones connected to your phone, thinking about home.
“You & i are Earth” by Anna B Savage is one of those albums that people will listen to when they want to feel calm and appreciate the shared experiences they have with others. It’s gentle sounds and meaningful lyrics reach into the listener’s soul and lets them know that they are not a lone.
