Being ranked one of the top discus throwers in Missouri is not an easy task, but seniors Mark Goldman and Eddie Paul are both ranked in the top five in the state class 4 for the discus.
“I handle competition pressure by clearing my mind because when I throw, it’s just me and my disc,” Paul said.
Athletes perform explosive moments where technique and mental strength are important. Throwers need to keep their composure and stay focused after a poor throw or tough competition.
“The best advice I’ve received from a coach is don’t think because the more you think, the more there will be, but if you do what you’ve been taught, there’s nothing to think about,” Paul said.
Paul has been on the track team since his freshman year and also plays football in the Fall. Goldman, who has also been on the team since freshman year, recently broke his own school record set just last season for the farthest throw.
“Nothing inspired me to start throwing, but one of my friends convinced me to do it, and I got really good at” Paul said.
It wasn’t easy to achieve this big accomplishment, taking countless hours in practice and years of dedicated training, all while working on improving their technique.
“Master your technique and listen to your coach because distance will come as you learn more,” Paul said
Being ranked in the state is a major accomplishment; it shows how an athlete can compete at a high level, opening doors to college scholarships and possibly an invitation to an elite competition.
“It feels cool to be ranked one of the best in the state, but it doesn’t change who I am or what I do. I come to do a job, and if the work I put in pays off, I will continue to be at the top,” Paul said.
Paul will be heading to Nebraska–Kearney University next year, where he signed to play football. Goldman will be attending Southeast Missouri State University, where he signed to continue track and field.
