On Wednesday, Oct. 23, Parkway North hosted its 10th annual Track-Or-Treat, with over 25 different booths and even more students working them.
“The first year we did [the event] was in 2013 and that Track-or-Treat was a Trunk-or-Treat at that time,” social studies teacher Julie Decaro said.
Decaro is the sponsor of the event and thought of bringing Trunk-or-Treat to North High after Rhonda Page took her to a Trunk-or-Treat event at her church.
“I went and I was like ‘Oh my goodness this would be so fun to do at North with our students’,” Decaro said. “I talked to my academic lab and we tried it out the following year.”
The event was very successful, up until the pandemic when they had to take a gap year. After the pandemic was lifted, Trunk-or-Treat was held on the field to help spread out the booths and provide spacing of the kids. For that reason, they adopted the nameTrack-or-Treat.
The event allows school activities like clubs, sports, and even friend groups to put up a booth and pass out candies to kids. Most of the time, the booths and students running the tables have a theme.
“This year, we had a record amount of friend groups doing a booth [compared to others],” Decaro said.
One of the after-school groups that usually hosts a booth is the theater department, whose theme was Minecraft. They had two different activities for the students to do with the cubes crafted by sophomore Miles Hines and the pyramid toss developed by the other students working the booth.
“I just got to see everyone’s costumes and I enjoy working with kids and it gets you involved in the community,” Hines said.
Students can interact with the kids and do something for their community. For some of the students, the greatest part of the experience is helping the kids do activities at booths and see their costumes.
“There was a kid who seemed interested in the percussion area. So I put him on my shoulder and brought him over to the percussion area so that he could play drums,” junior Felipe Toledo Arisa said.
During the event, parents and the kids can vote on their favorite booth. This year, the soccer team won with their theme of Smurfs.
