How long have you been doing the orchestra?
“I’ve been playing cello since fourth grade.”- Alexander Beck
What inspires you to do Orchestra?
“I’m inspired by other people seeing the ability within me that I don’t always see within myself, the ability to have some kind of creative and expressive outlet that I can rely on, and seeing other people’s enjoyment of my playing and the admiration is really driving.”- Alexander Beck
How does it feel to receive an honorable mention?
“It feels pretty good. I would have liked to have gotten into the ensemble, of course, but considering that this is the first and only time I’ll ever audition for all state, I’m glad that I’m getting this recognition. I feel like maybe these music honors programs don’t really get the spotlight that they should even though several kids audition for and actually end up participating in them.”- Alexander Beck
What advice would you give to others who are auditioning in the future?
“Be diligent and constantly open to criticism in your preparation, take advantages of the resources you have – especially like private lessons or teachers. You want to be mindful of what you’re eating, you want be sure you’re getting out enough sleep, and you need to be focused 100% on yourself.”- Alexander Beck
What comes easy and difficult when you’re doing Cello?
“I say two of the most difficult things are appreciating my own playing and progress – I can’t listen to my own playing the same way that somebody else does. Another thing is actually playing the cello is a very physical action. It’s like there’s a lot of small physical movements involved. Those are probably two of my biggest challenges.” – Alexander Beck
Do you plan on continuing orchestra or cello when you’re outside of high school?
“Yes. I don’t know what that’s going to look like. I may very well stop playing for several years, but even if that were to happen, I have faith that I could pick up my cello again after all those years and still be able to enjoy it to some degree.” – Alexander Beck
