To start the year, North High School, welcomed 245 new freshman students, who bring with them the usual nerves, fear for the future, different class structures, and teenage drama.
Freshman Ja’Niya St. John is coming to North from Northeast Middle. “The first day of school was actually fun. I met new people, got compliments [on my outfit], I got to join some clubs such as HOSA, and I’ve decided to try out for dance. So far, high school has treated me better than middle school, and I like it here.” St. John said
But, as the new school year kicks off to a great start for many students, others may be going through a more intense transition into high school, socially and mentally.
“I think it’s natural to be nervous. Every single year, we have all these new freshmen. For the new kids, you don’t know what to expect,” said James Priscu, an SSD teacher at North.
Since school’s back in full swing, the class of 2029’s developing sense of fashion is also back this year. Here at North, there’s an array of different clothing styles, such as Nike, The North Face, New Balance, and many more.
“Freshmen don’t wear the same pair of shoes, either. They wear different pairs of shoes every day. It’s never the same ones,” said Priscu.
Over the course of the next 226 school days here at North, some teachers, as well, have already had positive experiences and engaging events with the new freshmen.
“[New student]Orientation is my favorite experience,” said Ericka Webb, an administrative assistant here at North. . “What I enjoy about orientation is the excitement freshmen have about high school and wondering how it will be for them. Freshmen come with their eyes wide open and want to take in all the new wonders of high school.”,” said Ericka Webb, an administrative assistant here at North.
Along with the very active engagement from freshmen, there have been qualities that have not gone unnoticed by teachers and administrators.
“Freshmen are kind, and they are excited about school,” said Webb.
They don’t have many expectations, but rather to learn about the high school system. I really enjoy helping them learn and grow in high school. Most of all, freshmen are fun students to have as a class,” said Webb.
